Recently, we’ve noticed a number of headlines dealing with potentially contaminated water in California and across the nation. Contaminated Water in Los Altos and Colorado
The threat of contaminated water became all too real for some Los Altos residents in recent weeks as noted in reports from the San Jose Mercury News and radio station KLIV. On Sunday, July 26, the California Water 
Service (“Cal Water”) notified customers living in a four to five kilometer segment of the city that tests showed e. coli and total coliform bacteria in their water supply. For a few of the 853 customers affected, the related boil water order was only lifted this past Saturday (August 8) after Cal Water finished treating the water main.
The Los Altos contamination event was relatively small, especially compared to another case of contaminated water in the news this week. On Sunday, USA Today announced that the Environmental Protection Agency warned that some 3 million gallons of contaminated water, triple earlier estimates, had been discharged from an abandoned mine into a river in Colorado. The toxic water contains dangerously high levels of arsenic and lead. Despite having contained the spill, officials voiced several concerns with the foremost being ensuring people and animals in the area have access to safe drinking water. Since the degree of danger was unclear, officials also warned against physical contact with the water.
Three Examples of Waterborne Illness
It is not clear whether anyone fell ill because of contaminated water in Los Altos or Colorado. However, contaminated water has caused numerous cases of serious illness. A few key examples:
- Cancers, Autoimmune Disease in Hinkley, CA – In April, the LA Times marked the 15th anniversary of Erin Brockovitch, a somewhat-fictionalized version of real events in Hinkley, California. In the 1990s, residents learned that Hinkley groundwater contained chromium 6, a carcinogen that seeped into the water supply from unlined ponds allegedly used as dumpsites by the local utility company. Pacific Gas & Electric Co. paid $333 million to settle claims brought by sickened residents afflicted with cancer and autoimmune disease. Locals remain concerned about contamination to this day as the final cleanup plan inches forward.
- Male Breast Cancer, Leukemia at Camp Lejeune, NC — Last week, CBS News reported that the Department of Veterans Affairs would review cases of Marines and their families who developed cancers and other illnesses after being exposed to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina between 1953 and 1987. Illnesses tied to the water include leukemia and an extremely rare type of male breast cancer that impacted at least 82 men.
- Legionnaire’s in Bronx, NY — Last month, ABC News reported on an outbreak of Legionnaire’s Disease that sickened at least 46 people in the Bronx, New York. Legionnaire’s is a form of pneumonia contracted by inhaling small droplets of contaminated airborne water. Legionella was found in cooling units atop two buildings. The units release mist and could infect passersby.
